India is secular country where people of all important religions live peacefully. In India there is no national religion and the constitution of the country says it a secular country where people of every religion enjoys equal rights. Communal riots are reality but the government always work hard to establish harmony among the people of different religion. I know India well because I have spent many years in Mumbai during Mumbai riots.

I not only agree with Ollie but also respect her for making that keen an observation. Underlying differences and past conditioning shall always make it hard to embrace each other’s religions with utmost grace but the fact that we still live with each other and overlooking some unfortunate incidents, enjoy being a composite culture goes out to show that Indians should be applauded for such unity in diversity.

Curtailment of religious freedom is a setback to make the country grow as a nation. It oppresses to enjoy what one believes in.
As this continues in India, expect more disintegration and misunderstandings to overshadow talks toward peace and progress.

I strongly object to what Nautty has to say about the plight of Indian Muslims. It is true that some leaders from VHP and BJP are known for orchestrating riots in some parts of the country. But such miscreants are present in every society and in every country. It is this same country which failed to provide shelter to the Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen in order to appease its Muslim voters. Despite of all odds India is a secular nation and will always remain so.

@ Nautty, India doesn’t demand any of attestations as far as being secular is concerned. No doubt, religious differences in the last decade have increased owing to some of our leaders and some social and religious sects of society. Arpita had so very rightly named Taslima and her ostracizing for the sake of ”Muslim brothers in India”.
